Manchester United have failed in an attempt to persuade a billionaire liquor baron to become their new sponsor.

Vijay Mallya was not interested in having his brand logos, such as Whyte & Mackay and Kingfisher Airlines, being emblazoned across the United shirt.

The 53-year-old was identified as a possible benefactor given his love of sports. He owns the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League and several race horses. He also co-owns Formula One team Force India.

Mallya said: ‘Manchester United did approach us but we are not interested in sponsoring a Premier League club.’

United’s deal with current shirt sponsor AIG is due to expire in the summer of 2010.

What a shame… just what a Premiership team needed….. more money! Mallya should sponsor Hearts! ;)
