When I worked as a chef in Singapore, I tried several one’s from India, not a heady as the Scottish or American and Canadian brands, the local will be cheaper, as they add alarge duty to the imported brands.

Try a few of the local ones, to see the difference between the imports and the Indian brands.

“The UK has some quite significant issues related to taxation and everyone seems determined to tax the category continuously and therefore we need to look internationally. To date we have been quite dependent on the UK but that dependency is reducing year by year.
India is a hugely attractive whisky market for the future and we have a route to market through United Spirits which really is quite remarkable. It has 60 per cent of the market, so six out of ten bottles of spirits sold in India come out of our parent company.
Already we have gained a 13% share of the malt whisky category which in time will be a very, very significant profit opportunity.
If you compare India to China the interesting comparison is that China is not only about whisky but cognac whereas in India whisky is what consumers drink.”

He should look at Uruguay where there is a huge number of whisky drinkers just waiting for some exceptional whiskies to make their market entrance!

The Dalmore and Jura malts (owned by Whyte & Mackay) have a lot to do with this i suspect…. both are VERY nice single malts.

The Dalmore Cigar Malt & Jura Superstition being two of our personal favourites.

In Whisky related news they have also re-branded Glayva liqueur in a move that will see it go head to head with rival Drambuie in America.
I am hoping that includes South America as at the moment Drambuie has no competition here.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is exploring ways to appeal against a ruling by the Supreme court on a review petition that allows Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) company Khoday India to retain its popular brand Peter Scot.

The association is currently in talks with lawyers what avenues are open to overturn a decision which we consider to be fundamentally flawed and contrary to the evidence,” said a spokesman of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) in reply to an email sent by Business Standard.

Although the Supreme Court judgement in a review petition would be final, “In case of exceptional cases involving serious natural justice violations or in case of any bias from judiciary, curatory proceedings can be initiated in the Supreme Court to re-examine an earlier order,” explained Anoop Narayanan, Partner, Majmudar & Co International, on the options available for SWA to take fresh action.

“The primary reasons behind the decision in favour of Khoday is due to the long delay amounting to acquiescence (permission given through silence or passiveness) and that the brand does not deceive its customers of its Indian origins,” said Narayanan.

Peter Scot has been available in the market since 1968 and was registered in 1974. Besides it also has a rampant lion on its cover. Pictures of rampant lions on covers are prohibited in the UK.

Looking at the bottle on the right it is clear to see why the SWA is upset!

It would be impossible to look any more Scottish if it tried! Still i’ve never tried it…. but i suspect its fecking awful!

The World Whisky Bar Awards held few surprises, but offered lots to sample.

If more people are drinking whisky in India than is being produced in the world, the contradiction is that very few Indians know anything about whisky at all. Most simply drink to get high, and with the European Union claiming that Indian whisky isn’t whisky after all, just rum in fancy packaging, it’s time to get into the spirit of things and find out a little more about Indians’ favourite brew.

The event, Whisky Live, is part of Whisky magazine’s South Asia representative Sandeep Arora’s effort to take whisky drinking to cult status, and if his contention that the very top-end of the market to which he caters numbers no more than 2,500 persons, last evening’s turnout should ideally have included a good part of them. But, of course, since the awards and the event also cater to the trade, who in turn serve this high-end market, it might be said that it was a teaser of the size and scale it might grow into

While the Whisky magazine is to be launched some time later this year, Arora says the Whisky Live Awards event is aimed at identifying “the finest bars in India”, though only accredited bars can apply, which requires a fee of $230 and must conform to its select criteria. There are currently 60 accredited bars in India, and a list of the world’s award-winning Whisky bars is published in a directory annually in the magazine.
