Question by sever: What comes after Glenfiddich? (5* for best answer)?
I’ve only tried two single malts so far, Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12, what should I try next?

I want something that is a bit different (although i loved those two), not to comlex for a beginner and not to expensive for a student!

Please give me your top 3 or so, maybe something not from Speyside?

Best answer:

Answer by Weatherman
OK you want something different from Glenfiddich.

I would suggest trying Laphroaig (an Islay malt), Oban (Highland), or Talisker (Skye)

These three are completely different to each other, and are some of my favourites (well my reasonably priced favourites anyway)

Question by Rhylea: Which is a nicer quality whiskey: The Macallan or Highland Park?
I want to buy a nice bottle of single malt scotch for a friend as a gift and I’ve read a lot of posts about these two particular scotches. I’m looking to spend no more than about 85 dollars on the bottle which I assume will be a 750mL bottle. I am open to any other suggestions as well; it doesn’t have to be The Macallan or Highland Park.

Best answer:

Answer by rollakid
Great thing about scotch whisky is that they are all different, and depends on your taste, what are you looking for, and what is your (or your friend’s) expectation.

Both The Macallan and Highland Park are on the sweater side of whisky, with The Macallan sweeter, and more wine-ish, and Highland Park felt like eating an orange, and then chew on the left over orange peel, as it turns from sweet to bitter.

Since I myself is an Islay whisky fan, I prefer Highland Park since it’s a little smoky and peaty, which I find it lacking a little in The Macallan (ofcourse haven’t tried every single Maccalan yet).

Highland Park is also a very all-rounded whisky:

Fruity? Checked.
Floral? A little bit, good enough.
Malt? Yes, but felt like it’s hidden behind all that honey smell. Cream cracker too.
Dry? Oh yes turns very dry and bitter after the sweetness.
Peat? A little, good enough, since some people might not like it.
Smoke? More like steam to me but interesting enough.

If your friend is a wine lover, maybe the Macallan is good, else, Highland Park for it’s rounded nature. Or, a bottle of Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or Lagavulin from Islay, but your friend would either love or hate you

I can’t help with the price, since I find the price to be all over the place depends on location.

Question by nicolekadman: Scotch for my Boss?
I would like to get my boss a bottle of single-malt Scotch for the Holidays. I don’t know anything about scotch. What could I get that would impress the guy? What are the high-end brands? I heard of Macallan, Talisker and Laphroaig, but don’t know which of these is the best! I don’t want to go over 0. Any input would be great! Thanks!
